Who sponsors clinical trials?
Clinical studies are led by clinician-researchers and basic scientists who want to improve the standard of care and who are generally affiliated with one or more of the following organizations:
Drug-development companies and medical device manufacturers.
Federal agencies such as the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Department of Defense (DOD).
NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers (see resources).
Cooperative groups, such as the Gynecologic Oncology Group and the East Coast Oncology Group, among others. Cooperative groups are large networks of members that include researchers, physicians, and health care professionals at public and private institutions across the country. Cooperative groups are funded primarily by the National Cancer Institute (NCI).
Foundations focused on a particular disease, for example the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, Inc., the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation, among others.
