What challenges are unique to Ovarian Cancer clinical research?
Although ovarian cancer is deadly, primarily because it is usually diagnosed when it is advanced, it is a “rare” cancer. In US women in 2007, for example, there were eight times as many breast cancer cases (more than 176,000) as there were ovarian cancer cases (more than 20,000) (6, 7).
The lower incidence of ovarian cancer as well as other gynecologic cancers, along with overall low adult participation rates, magnifies the challenge of recruiting sufficient numbers of women.
